Lund University naturally has its position among Europe’s leading seats of learning. As Scandinavia’s largest institution for higher education and research, the university today operates within a broad spectrum of subjects. About 5,500 people work at Lund University – teachers, researchers, administrative and technical staff – and there are about 40,600 students.

The main body of the university is in Lund but there are also many educational and research institutions in Malmö. The university also has a campus in Helsingborg as well as local centres of studies at several locations around about Skåne. The university furthermore arranges the most Internet-based, long distance educational training courses in the country.

Basic education at Lund University stands in close proximity to research and society in general. The courses aim at all levels to develop those qualities which determine a university analytical capability, critical thinking as well as a capacity for seeking, gathering and presenting information. The selection of courses and their contents is undergoing continual change in order to be able to meet the demands of a good and relevant education.

The university stands in defence of free fundamental research and research’s significance for the development of society. It carries out extensive applied research programmes in close cooperation with businesses and the public sector, and assists in seeing that new companies are created in the region having their point of departure in the university’s research.
