The worst instances were in Jersey City, New Jersey, in the late 1980s where Indian men and women were regularly harassed on the street. One young man, an executive of a New York City bank, was beaten so badly by a group of youths that he died in the hospital. Most of those committing violent act seem to have been young, native-born, lower-class whites who resented the obvious economic success of many Indians who seemed to them to be taking over what they regarded as "their" neighborhood. Despite these and other setbacks, Asian Indians as a group seem to be doing well.

The first immigrants from Barbados were white settlers, some of them former indentured servants, who were displaced by African slaves brought to Barbados in vast numbers for its booming sugar industry after 1650. Almost as many African slaves were brought to the tiny island as to all of British North America, what is now the United States. Later in the colonial period some Barbarian slave owners immigrated to the Carolinas, where they purchased plantations and made other investments.
