Furthermore, these investigators will be involved in programs of research such that a series of studies will build upon one another. If these predictions come true, the integrative critical reviews should be even more valuable than heretofore. Comprehensive reviews of research should lead to more research utilization in the practice arena, in nursing care delivery, in nursing education, and in the public policy arena. Consequences of Urinary Incontinence Outpatient. The psychologic effects of incontinence have been of interest to researchers in the United Kingdom and the United States. It should be noted that the majority of findings are from studies where the samples are drawn from individuals who sought help for incontinence. The majority of incontinent individuals, however, do not seek help; therefore, the ability to generalize from the findings is limited. Wyman, Harkins, and Fantl (1990) noted that: (a) standardized measurement tools have not been refined; (b) age, gender, and ethnic differences in perceived impact should be investigated; (c) differences in impact between those who seek help and those who do not should be explored; (d) the influence of comorbidity on the psychologic impact of incontinence should be explored; (e) the relationship of perceived impact and different types of incontinence should be investigated; and (f) effect of treatment on the psychologic impact of urinary incontinence should be determined.
