He spent long, happy hours writing articles for Canadian newspapers and saw these projected on to the wall in front of his bed.

No stimulus, however intense, that was too brief would elicit a conscious experience. When stimulating nerves in the periphery or in the spinal chord, however, the stimulus had only to be above a certain intensity to elicit awareness. The necessary intensity is probably that sufficient to produce the longer-lasting ‘ripples’ of the evoked response. Large, short-lived local responses, adjacent to a stimulus site in the sensory cortex do not seem to matter; they can be produced by stimuli of insufficient intensity to give rise to awareness and can be abolished altogether (by applying an inhibitory neurotransmitter) without affecting awareness of more intense stimuli.

One might say, This simply means that the EEG reflects processes underlying awareness and the MEG does not’. The problem is, though, that it is axonal current flows that are usually thought to reflect most closely information flow relevant to the content of consciousness. This is because axonal flows are directly driven by the depolarisation waves that are thought to encode information. It is far from clear what the correlated EEG activity is actually reflecting. There’s quite a bit of evidence that different EEG frequencies are especially associated with different sorts of brain activity, though there is probably quite a lot of overlap.
