However, despite its critical and commercial success, Brokeback Mountain did not generate a new wave of queer indies with crossover potential, as was often speculated during the film’s peak. Brokeback Mountain did not make American cinema, or even indie cinema, less resistant to queer material. It has also had its fair share of criticism from both the right and the left as well as by dissenting voices from the gay press, and frustration by ‘truly’ independent gay filmmakers and producers. Yet Brokeback Mountain still stands as a testament to the potential and the possibilities that the indie sector offers, however commercially driven, to sometimes get it right.
A basic mythology of the classical Hollywood Western is that the cowboy is good and the ‘Indian’ is bad. The cowboy/Indian opposition in which the latter is demonised produces a contemporary myth that helped legitimate the real historical colonial expansion and genocide of indigenous Americans. A binary logic also underpins structuralism which subsequently lends itself well to texts. It is especially suited to genre as generic structures are often formulaic in their apparent working of thematic and visual oppositions.
Following a short period at full cost in the domestic sell-through market (approximately three months), the Brokeback Mountain DVD was very quickly discounted and on special offer at low prices, often tied to ‘buy one get one free’ deals alongside other Universal DVD releases in every major high street media chain and supermarket. Less than a year later, in January 2007, Brokeback Mountain was re-released on DVD in the USA as a double disc special edition with virtually no extra content. Other indie films tend to follow a similar release, distribution and sale pattern for a speedy turnaround from theatrical exhibition to domestic purchase and then premium cable broadcast within 12 months.
