I started research with my students within a year after reaching Kanpur. We had a few modern spectrometers and other instruments that were set up as central facilities. We began to order chemicals and instruments through the American programme and slowly accumulated most of the items required for research. The American consortium helped IIT Kanpur in many ways. The first head of the American programme was Prof. Norman Dahl of MIT. He and Dr. Kelkar got along famously and this helped the Institute in a big way.

There was KRK getting into a taxi with my old friend V. Srinivasan. KRK was taking Srinivasan out lunch to celebrate his appointment as a junior research assistant. Once, KRK was approached by a clerk for a loan of 10 rupees. When the clerk said that he would return the money as early as possible, KRK gave him 10 rupees and remarked “You have the audacity to promise that you will return the money” before sending him away. ) He stopped, and then again said, “The chalcopyrites of Chitradurga”.
