I felt disgusted with myself. I left his cell and leaned on the landing rail as the screws piled up the stairs. ’ In 1974 Grendon Prison accepted Alex, despite the fact that he was a Category-A prisoner, but he didn’t last long there. One of the fundamental requirements of a prisoner at Grendon is to accept and come to terms with their offence.

He was never to be bothered by another prisoner again. ‘When the attack came it was when I least expected it. I had gone to fetch a bowl of hot water for a wash. I felt an arm go around my throat and the press of sharp metal at the side of my neck. I felt someone else undoing my jeans and pulling them down. I knew then what was going to happen, but I couldn’t believe it. There were four of them.
