JOHN DUFRESNE Like a Syrupy Sweet The opposite of risk is security. Peace of mind and comfort. Safety and stability, shelter and snug harbor. Risk is sailing into the storm, all flags flying. It’s allowing for the possibility, even the likelihood, of suffering and harm. So why would I do something so foolish? Risk is an invitation to failure, isn’t it? What sense would it make to imperil and humiliate myself, possibly upset my loved ones, jeopardize my serene little world? And yet I do take risks although I’m not the sort of risk-taker they write about in best sellers or celebrate in Jackass movies.

I don’t put my body at risk except with fats and carbohydrates, which, it turns out, may not be as risky as spinach and lettuce. You can be anything, perhaps, but you can’t be everything. You have to choose.

If I’m drawing from life, how do I deal with the risk of committing the unforgivable, of revealing someone else’s flaws or secrets? My friend, for instance, saying to her daughter when she complained about her stepfather, “Do you like living in this house? ” And, by extension—I know her daughter heard the unspoken as well as the spoken—to a poorer neighborhood, a rougher school, one where you will have no friends? Implied in those two lines of dialogue is a story about my friend’s strained relationship with her husband, her willingness to emotionally blackmail her daughter, and the subliminal lesson about what a woman might give up for financial security.
