Once again, DeAnn was on a mission and began doing research. She went to the PTI (Parent Training and Information Center) office and made copies of everything in their library about Inclusion. The more she read, the more she was persuaded that Ryan needed to be with typical peers. Since the time of his removal from his first kindergarten classroom, he had spent very little time with typical children. When Matt also read the material, he, too, was convinced of the need for Ryan to spend time with general education students.

This also put us in a position to become involved with other parents and to reach out into the community for support. In many ways, the difficult position we were put in by the IEP committee encouraged us to become better advocates for Ryan. Though we suspected that Ryan had Asperger Syndrome, we could not find information on interventions; however, we began to pay heed to our instincts. We continued to learn and to push the IEP committee to provide interventions we thought were appropriate. The result was that, while we did not get the placement and all the interventions we felt Ryan needed, we did succeed in getting him some of the appropriate services and supports.

We insisted on having Ryan placed in the classroom 34 Getting Services for your Child on the Autism Spectrum that we had decided on. We believe that the IEP committee agreed because they simply had no other placement suggestions, other than the Child Management Class. The committee accepted the doctor’s recommendations for Ritalin therapy and counseling. Although the IEP committee had agreed to Ryan receiving counseling services, it was not documented in the IEP paperwork who would pay, leaving us with the impression that we were responsible for paying for the counseling.
