Now you have a larger thoracic cavity, with less air pressure. To equalize the air pressure (otherwise you would collapse) air rushes into the lungs which fill up and increase in size. As the diaphragm relaxes (goes back into its original place) the space in the thoracic cavity decreases, and the lungs are forced to give up the gases in them so that once again the air pressure is equalized. This is called "expiration," or "exhaling," because now you expire or exhale the gases in the lungs. But the gases in the lungs are not the same as those you breathed in or inspired.
