The major changes during the year reflected a shift to newer models of the basic types already deployed. 3 and described in the following paragraphs. Nevertheless, in a series of reactions to Soviet policy, the United States rapidly emerged as the chief protector of much more of Europe than the Anglo-American forces had ever liberated. Some of the European lands thus shielded from Soviet power would otherwise have become client-states more constrained to obedience; others would have retained a much greater autonomy but not of course a full independence, except for the United Kingdom. That the Soviet Union was in 1945 devastated by war, that it had only just begun to absorb its new conquests and suzerainties of Eastern Europe are quite irrelevant.
