A series of events directed my thinking toward highland Sumatra: I wanted to continue research within Indonesia; during 1957-8 I had studied at the University of Vienna with Professor Robert Heine-Geldern, who spoke often and enthusiastically of Bronze Age survivals in highland Sumatra; I had studied Indonesian in the summer of 1969 at Yale with two extraordinarily stimulating Batak (Ibu Tobing and Tunggul Siagian), and on the advice of a mutual friend I wrote James Siegel, who suggested that I look at Batak, and particularly the Pak Pak Batak.
As we shall see, they may not be what have been called "focal," or "prototype," terms. For each language I treat the entire corpus of words - the master list plus the other words produced by the synonym-eliciting task - as a category or realm. This realm is called by superordinate terms in each language (Indonesian: perasaan hati; Minangkabau: raso ati). The realm in each language corresponds more or less to the English category emotion, and my goal of investigating emotion in Indonesia has led me to identify and explore this realm.
