The study of human consciousness requires both internal and external views. (Damasio 1999: 82) These comments apply to reading processes as well as to a more blanket case of consciousness, and raise an important issue. There are different approaches to research into reading and other forms of text processing. Some routes deal only with what can be publicly measured in some way; others attempt to take account of personally ‘felt’ questions and responses that are often never articulated. It is possible to be reductive either way, since the ‘felt’ issues can often only be raised in the context of the researcher’s own personal reading experience.

How much of this kind of tinkering is a useful preliminary to more focused work, and what is lost if we encourage students to bypass this initial playful stage and move straight to activity more readily defined as purposeful by adult agendas? On the other hand, what is the danger that at least some students will never move on to the level of purposeful inquiry and will instead find it easy and attractive to keep themselves constantly occupied at this initial and perhaps perfunctory level? Clearly these are questions about attention and about personal decisions concerning salience and purpose.
