McGregor While Maslow deals with a general theory of human motivation that can also be applied to the motivation to work, Douglas McGregor (The Human Side of Enterprise, 1957) deals specifically with the behaviour of people within an organization, a business or a company. To this end McGregor formulated his ‘Theory X’ and ‘Theory Y’. According to Theory X, work is unpleasant for the average person in the modern world.

Several years ago the author took part in a discussion during which it became evident that one of the participants (a manager) believed ‘hygiene factors’ actually referred to sanitary arrangements. These factors are also often described as ‘satisfiers’ and ‘dissatisfiers’. The terms intrinsic and extrinsic factors are also used. Whichever term may be preferred, the subject of study is always in the first instance the cause of work satisfaction, and in the second instance the trigger for dissatisfaction.

Instrumentality: A milestone on the way to reaching this goal. Expectancy: The probability that this milestone can be reached. Positive V, I and E → positive motivation • Expectancy means expectation, prospect, hope. It expresses how high the probability is that the chosen action or activity will have the desired result. Assuming that in each scenario there are a number of options, these three factors offer an explanation of why people are motivated to certain courses of action. ’ This is positive valence.
