There are no secondary sexual differences between the sensiflae of males and females. Thus, 53 W. Sixl, E. Dengg, H. Waltinger they represent generic markers which can be used for systemuic classification. In addition, studies of the apical portion of the hypostome (corona) in Haemaphysalis concinna, H. inermis and H. punctata indicate that distinct morphological differences exist at specific level. Finally, it has been possible to determine in detail the fine structure of the areae porosae, the hypostome and the chelicerae.
On transfer to a rearing cell they resume what appears to be a normal life. The females lay viable eggs. Micrographs obtained from live mites are poor in quality since the undried, uncoated material becomes "charged up". Also, resolution drops off as the accelerating voltage (normally 10 to 20 kV for mites) is reduced. However, this technique may be important since, eventually, it should be possible to adapt the instrument for microsurgery, either with conventional micro-probes inserted into the specimen chamber or, more probably, using a method based upon beam-etching, a technique which is now under development.
