This is what is termed the technological solution at the feature level (TSF). A TSF is an ordered set of operations that satisfy the feature geometry and technological requirements. TSFs are stored in the manufacturing database according to the feature transition diagrams (FTD), which represent all the available operation sets capable of producing the feature (see Figure 3). Based on the individual feature technological requirements, the manufacturing database is queried to determine all the equally weighted solutions for producing a feature with the desired technological attributes.
Instructions or rules for generating geometry derived from the measured featured can also be given. A simple description language has been created for this activity and this is described in the next section. J. MEDLAND, G. MULLINEUX AND R. SINGH There are thus two personal computers controlling the measuring event. One taking a description of the component from the operator and the other filling in the details in terms of points probed on the component itself. Figure 1 shows the arrangement. These both send data to a controlling computer program running on a workstation.
The second sheet is then united with the first to form a new sheet. The third is intersected with the new sheet and the result is checked again. This sequence is repeated until the last sheet is intersected and united. The sheet which is formed finally is the component silhouette together with the outlines of through holes as viewed from the approach direction. This is saved for later use. The 20 Boolean operations are performed by way of 30 thin sheets as 20 Booleans have not yet been implemented within the modeller.
